What is money dysmorphia?
A new term, “money dysmorphia,” aims to describe the distorted view of one's finances that nearly one-third, or 29%, of Americans say they now experience, according to a recent report by Credit Karma, often from comparing their financial situation to others' and feeling inadequate.
A new term, “money dysmorphia,” aims to describe the distorted view of one's finances that nearly one-third, or 29%, of Americans say they now experience, according to a recent report by Credit Karma, often from comparing their financial situation to others' and feeling inadequate.
People with money dysmorphia may engage in compulsive spending, hoarding, or debt, and may experience feelings of shame or guilt related to their financial behaviour. The financial stress and stresses that come with this disorder can be overwhelming, affecting various facets of one's life.
A recent survey (conducted in the US) warns that almost half of Gen Z and millennials (respectively 43% and 41%) experience “money dysmorphia”, the situation when people feel insecure about their financial standing irrespective of the reality of their financial situation.
“I do this stuff all day!” and “But this is my thing,” or “C'mon, you know you're not great with numbers,” are all financial gaslighting misdemeanors that can become threads of mistrust undermining an otherwise effective partnership. A tool often used to perpetrate financial gaslighting is the personal spreadsheet.
- Track your spending in detail. Keep a log of every expense for 1-2 months to get an accurate view of where your money is going. ...
- Automate saving and investing. ...
- Cancel unnecessary expenses. ...
- Avoid social comparison. ...
- Celebrate financial wins. ...
- Find balance.
The signs that you might be experiencing financial anxiety include: Rumination about your financial situation regardless of your ability to cover bills. This may interrupt your sleep, or distract you from other aspects of your life. Fear that your financial situation could change for the worse.
Everyone worries about money from time to time, but financial anxiety is different. Financial anxiety is an obsessive fear of things related to money that can often be debilitating. Financial anxiety can be triggered by any number of things, not just a lack of money.
The term is contentious among mental health professionals and as of 2023, money disorder is not a clinical diagnosis in either the DSM or ICD medical classifications of diseases and medical disorders.
While ADHD symptoms were discussed in the early 1900s, the disorder was not officially named until 1987. This is why you see generations like millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha with ADHD diagnoses more than you see in baby boomers and Gen X.
Why does all of Gen Z have anxiety?
From issues like discrimination and human rights to personal safety and violence, it's all stressful to younger Americans. But, like their older counterparts, health- and finance-related concerns topped the list of stressors.
To put in simpler terms, a person with gender dysphoria is not mentally ill; they are dissatisfied with the gender assigned at their birth. A person with body dysmorphia has a disorder in which they perceive their body or face as “ugly,” “fat,” or otherwise unattractive despite medical or personal reassurances.
Having financial double standards
They can freely spend money on whatever they want, but they'll criticize you for even the most basic of purchases. Another example is when a narcissist spends large amounts of money to impress other people but is then stingy or protective of their money in private.
Narcissist financial abuse is often covert and subtle, making it difficult for victims to recognize it until they are entirely trapped. Narcissistic financial abuse can manifest in various ways, from controlling bank accounts and spending habits to using money to manipulate or punish their partner.
Financial abuse is a tactic used by abusers to increase control over their victim through maneuvers like reducing the victim's access to bank accounts and assets or forcing them to quit their job. Financial abuse often prevents victims from leaving their abuser because they don't have the financial means to do so.
In my experience, many people feel anxious about money, despite doing well on paper, because they don't know what they're doing – and that causes them to feel out of control. In such cases, more money can just worsen the anxiety because now they have even more money that they don't know what to do with.
For some, overspending becomes buying-shopping disorder, or compulsive shopping disorder (CSD), which is characterized by repetitive, uncontrollable spending that causes serious life difficulties.
- Don't let money consume your thoughts.
- Get organized.
- Let go.
- Set up monthly auto payments.
- Talk to someone about your financial stress.
- Manage your health to build wealth.
- Focus on your financial goals.
- Live a little.
What causes financial anxiety? According to Blackwell, there are many triggers that can cause financial anxiety. Some common ones include a potential job loss, a money misstep, a lack of personal finance education or your childhood beliefs about money.
If you are giving them money and their finances are not getting better or they are not putting effort into helping themselves (i.e. not looking for a job)… its time to give up. If you are giving them money you can't afford to lose… its time to give up.
Why do I stress about money when I have plenty?
You worry about something much deeper than money. You've got an idea that life is inherently insecure, because it is unpredictable. Hoarding money (or any other resource) is a typical psychological compensation mechanism to calm down this sense of insecurity.
Spenders value experiences. For savers, reaching goals is more important. But if you have money-related fears—also known as chrometophobia—life can feel downright gloomy.
The psychological disorder is called Compulsive Hoarding Syndrome (CHS). It is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with money, often to the point of obsession. People with CHS may hoard money, save it compulsively, or feel a need to constantly acquire more money.
The excessive attachment to riches has a name in medical psychology, crematomania or obsessive desire to accumulate money and wealth.
Financial stress is a common struggle for many people. It can affect your mental and physical well-being and impact your overall quality of life. Money worries can come from different sources, including unexpected expenses, a sudden job loss or feeling unprepared for the future.
